O’Keeffes set for Duhallow gathering
Corkman 06/08/2016

Duhallow is looking forward to an influx of O’Keeffes who will be in the area from September 9-11 for a weekend of discovery and fun while tracing the path of ancestors.

It’s recognised that the O’Keeffe name has evolved in many ways with emigration to new lands over the past centuries, for example, O’Keefe, Keffe, O’Kief, O Cuiv, O Caoimh, and Keefer to name a few. PRO Patricia O’Keeffe said the family descended from Art, king of Munster from 742-762.
“The O’Keeffes were princes of Glanworth in the Fermoy area of Cork before the Anglo Norman invasions. They lost their lands and resettled in Dromagh which became a stronghold of the O’Keeffes, building three great Castles in the Barony of Dishallow”, she said.
They remained a very distinguished clan in the district until the 16th Century. After the Cromwellian hostilities, the O’Keeffe name scattered throughout the country and a sprinkling of O’Keeffes sought out new life in other countries”, said Patricia.
Clan Chieftain, Dan Joe O’Keeffe from Rathmore -a man with a convivial and captivating personality – has a huge interest in the clan gathering and envisages the weekend can be utilised for tourism in the greater Duhallow areas as there is great history attached to this area.
“The clan gathering is aimed at bringing O’Keeffes together and tracing the footsteps of our forefathers where we hope to get a glimpse of what life was like for them. The weekend is open and welcoming to all and it is a chance to meet family and make new friends, come and taste our Sliabh Lurachra culture and enjoy our music, song, storytelling and dance”, said Patricia.
Proceedings will be opened by clan chieftain Dan Joe O’Keeffe in Dromtariffe Hall on Friday, September 9, followed by entertainment by the local traditional group “Buttons and Strings” from Rathcoole. Maurice O’Keeffe of Irish Life & Lore will also a talk on the subject of the O’Keeffes.
Saturday features historical exhibitions and genealogical advice, guided bus tours to historical sites related to the O’Keeffes, such as castles and strongholds along the beautiful Blackwater valley in addition to a trip to Newmarket where there is rich O’Keeffe history linked to the area. The tours will be given by local historian/folklorist Raymond O’Sullivan and Dromtarriffe historian David O’Keeffe.
A full banquet in the Wallis Arms Hotel, Millstreet, on Saturday night will be followed by entertainment in true Sliabh Luachra style by Ceoltoiri Sliabh Luachra.
Sunday begins with the O’Keeffe Memorial Mass at noon, followed by a talk on O’Keeffe Coshe Mang by genealogist Lorna Moloney UCC Lecturer. Tours cost €10 each and banquet tickets cost €30 per person.
Booking for the banquet is essential through the following mobile numbers: 087-2547498 or 086-8248537.
